UPDATE – 2010 GRADUATES
The Department of Education Transition Coordinators made the following reports:
P79 – Gloria Johnson, TC
36 graduates – 5 have definite places with program of choice and 3 are pretty sure of a place; many are still waiting for the written report for their evals but most have MSC
P226 – Irene Kawamura, TC
12 graduates – 7 are set; 3 others are confident they have place but it has not been finalized; one person is moving out of state. All have MSC.
P138 – Illana Abramson
7 graduates – 5 are set ; the other 2 are waiting for their written evals.
It appears the most common problem is the turn-around time for the evals. However, the good news is that almost all graduates have MSC. A suggestion was made to encourage Manhattan families who are willing to travel to seek evals in other boroughs where the wait time is much shorter. Also, a family can request to be put on a clinic’s cancellation list so they will be notified if an earlier evaluation spot becomes available.
Illana Abramson, TC P138, mentioned that the most significant visit she made to an agency with some of her families, occurred when the agency had a former student speak to the parents about the day program. She said this visit made a real impact on those who attended.
Note: If an individual does not qualify for Medicaid, services may still be possible. First apply for OPWDD eligibility to ensure person qualifies for services. Psychological evals and psycho-social evals are available for free from AHRC. Some agencies such as GHO and Sinergia provide non-medicaid eligible case management.
