Managing Mealtime Behaviors in Individuals with Autism:

Exploring the Autism-Picky Eating Connection

Target Audience – Parents and Providers

January 29, 2015 – 9:30am -12noon

15 West 65th Street – Guild Lighthouse – Manhattan

Mealtime behaviors can be very challenging for families of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Recent research has found that children with ASD are five times more likely to experience mealtime difficulties including extremely narrow food selections, ritualistic eating behaviors, and mealtime-related tantrums (Sharp et al., 2013). Food selectivity, refusal, gagging— these are not only frustrating but scary because they are directly related to one’s health and wellbeing. This seminar will review the latest research findings surrounding mealtime problems in ASD, strategies for making mealtime fun and stress free, and will review the most well documented, positive approaches for both preventing and responding to mealtime behaviors.
