It’s the start of a new school year and as thrilled as most of you are to have your kids back in school for many of you the thrill is already gone! Each year we hear reports from parents about how stressful it is managing to get their children’s IEPs adhered to, bus drivers and matrons with attitudes, routes not being followed, no air conditioning, no seat belts (or belts that are too tight), and on and on. Children miss time in schools, sometimes days, until these issues are resolved, and sometimes, the resolutions aren’t permanent.
THIS YEAR THERE IS HELP FOR YOU!
I’ve attached a letter written to the Chancellor by civil rights attorney and former director of the NY Civil Liberties Union, Norman Siegel. There are many cases noted and one may seem just like yours, but if it isn’t please fill out the attached “incident report” and follow the directions at the bottom.
IT IS CRUCIAL THAT ALL THE INCIDENTS THAT YOU’VE EXPERIENCED ARE REPORTED. It is the only way change will happen.
If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne Peters, copied above or myself.
Please pass this along to all your contacts who may benefit.
Norman Siegel will be presenting at the JCC this Fall. Watch for the flier!
