Dear Friends and Colleagues:
Today, approximately 3,500 individuals with developmental disabilities over the age of 60 are receiving services from OPWDD in their homes and in the community.
As part of our ongoing effort to help individuals with developmental disabilities remain healthy and age safely in their communities, OPWDD and the New York State Office for the Aging have released Aging in Community, a training video intended to help inform anyone interested in improving the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities who are aging.
Empowering individuals to live in the community is critical to OPWDD’s work. Most people want to live independently or with their families for as long as possible. While the individuals with developmental disabilities that we serve share that wish, there may be additional supports, services, and resources needed to ensure their health and safety. This program will help individuals and families understand what is necessary to continue living successfully in the community.
The release of this video, and development of the curriculum in it, was funded through a grant from the Developmental Disabilities Planning Council. It is designed for direct support professionals, family members, and other caregivers, and aims to inform, provide tips, and foster new ways of thinking to enhance the quality of life for individuals as they get older.
I anticipate this video will help people better prepare for their future, and that of their loved one, as we recognize the unique challenges an individual with a developmental disability may develop as they get older.
Key topics include: fall prevention, informed choice, menopause, oral health, inactivity, and maintaining independence.
The series is available online by visiting OPWDD’s YouTube channel. You may also request a DVD by emailing your name and mailing address to Martha.Schunk@opwdd.ny.gov.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Burke
