Guest Speaker/Presentation: “Self Direction” – Presented by Jennifer Teich, AHRC, NYC Self-direction is not a service; it is a way in which services are delivered. The person with a developmental disability, or the person they select to help them, controls the services by purchasing the supports needed as identified in their plan. The person works with their MSC and Circle of Support to identify what supports will be purchased through their budget. The person and/or their chosen advocate choose the mix of supports that work for them as an individual, how & when they are provided, and the staff and/or organizations that provide them. As part of self-direction, a person obtains a Support Broker and a Fiscal Intermediary who will assist in the plan implementation. If a person is interested in selfdirecting their services, they should let their Medicaid Service Coordinator (MSC) know so they may assist in starting the process. (See attached PowerPoint from this presentation) June 2016Graduates: At this time the schools project approximately 90 Manhattan students expecting to graduate in June 2016 who will be transitioning into OPWDD Adult Services. The school staff reported that the vast majority have already been determined to meet OPWDD eligibility and over half have MSC in place. The school transition representatives are actively working with the Metro DDRO’s staff to coordinate & ensure the process is underway. All graduates need to go through the Front Door. It’s important to remember that all graduates need to complete the full Front Door process and that although the attendance at a Front Door Information Session is required; it is not the only piece requiring the full participation of the individual/caregiver. Some families have misunderstood that once they attend the information session, they have completed the process.
