Challenging Behaviors & Frightening Moments-
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Taking care of a family member with
intellectual and/or developmental disabilities
can be stressful at times.
But you are NOT alone.
When the family is overwhelmed – in crisis – the right support can make ALL the difference.
NYSTART provides crisis prevention and response services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who present with complex behavioral and mental health needs, and to their families and others in the community who provide support.
The NYSTART program offers training, consultation, therapeutic services and technical assistance to enhance the ability of the community to support eligible individuals and focuses on establishing integrated services with providers. Providing supports that help individuals to remain in their home or community placement is NYSTART’s first priority.

Lifespire’s in-home behavior management provides weekly instruction to parents or persons demonstrating problematic behaviors in the home. A Behavioral Intervention Specialist (BIS) assesses the individual’s behavior through observation and parental input. A clinician develops a behavioral plan and guides the family how to put the plan into effect. The case is continually monitored and progress reviewed with the family. Referrals can be made by Care Managers or parents themselves.

QSAC and YAI offer “In-Home Behavior Management” which is a short-term training program that provides support to families dealing with challenging behaviors. Training is geared toward supporting caregivers and direct service professionals (DSP’S). OPWDD eligibility is required and the individual MUST live at home with their family

YAI also offers “Crisis Intervention” where a team of behavioral intervention specialists and social workers provide information and referral, advocacy, and short term crisis counseling. This hopefully stabilizes family relationships, maintains integrity of the family unit and promotes functional behavior.
